Walk this Way

In the beginning, we coax our children to walk by calling them to us with a hint of excitement in our voices, our arms outstretched - a smile on our face.

May 2010

Before you truly understand what is happening, a shift occurs - gradually until it smacks you square in the forehead. The shift where you find yourself quietly looking at your child's back, with nothing to occupy your arms. Your voice is still laced with excitement and your face glows with pride but its because your child is walking away from you.......not towards you.

Spontaneity

Lets be honest, I love schedules, to do lists, and organization. But this weekend, spontaneity served us well.

I so appreciate those who are flexible enough for an evening of friends and laughter with only a few hours notice and those who understand that there is always an occasion for some fro-yo!

Evils

In order to combat the independent will of a 3 year old (as a wise friend shared, 3 is 2 with intent) I find myself offering choices. Many times, its the lesser of two evils; "you can either eat your dinner or go to bed" - "you can speak nicely or have a seat in time out".

What if there isn't a semi-positive option?

Hopefully my children will choose not to let the evil in or let it out.....

The "evil" depicted above are characters in Disney on Ice (Bruce - the shark from Nemo, Genie from Aladdin, and Beast from Beauty & the Beast)

No Words

Celia Eleanor Betz died one week ago. Just two months shy of her 5th birthday and two years after her family received the official Batten's Disease diagnosis.

I could quote a famous philosopher, bible scripture, or song lyrics but nothing seems right except the insight of some very special children so this video will suffice.

After Celia's memorial service a few families went to Red Robin. When the children received their after dinner balloon they decided to share a special red (to match Celia's hair) one with Celia in heaven.....

Irony

Playing outside in the sunshine in January.

Playing soccer in your church clothes.
